Review of Picasa photo management software: Google has a winner.

January 27th, 2006 by Chuck Sharp

If you haven’t heard of Google’s Picasa photo software, you’re in for a treat. Picasa helps you manage your digital photo and image collection. It handles all aspects of photo management, and it’s free software too.

Quick Summary

Main features:

  • Indexing (finding and cataloging) all pictures on your computer
  • Organizing pictures using folders, labels (categorical tags), and captions
  • Downloading (importing) pictures from your digital camera the Right Way (this is why I love Picasa, personally)
  • Basic image editing, professional touch-ups, and effects
  • Backing up your image collections
  • Very nice photo printing and viewing options
  • “Fun features” like a photo screensaver, collages, and more.

When you install this software, the first thing it does is to scan your entire computer every last image. I think of this as a great feature. For some of you though, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Once it has done its scanning thing, you’ll see all your pictures, which you can scroll through, view, edit, and print your pictures. Try it out, you’ll love it.

If you want a more complete spiel, read Google’s own feature review of Picasa 2.

You can download Picasa here.
