Steps to a tuned-up, pest-free, happy PC: a preventive maintenance checklist
January 20th, 2006 by Chuck Sharp
This is a checklist I use to do preventive maintenance work on computers. Preventive maintenance means cleaning up the little things before they become big things. It includes sections on computer inspection, diagnostics, security, optimization, and physical cleaning. This is the most comprehensive and effective series and sequence of computer maintenance actions that I’ve found so far to improve the longevity, stability, and performance of a Windows PC.
If you’ve ever wondered what steps you ought to take to dust out your computer, inspect it for hardware or software problems, ensure that no spyware or viruses are on your system, and in general make your PC run faster for longer, then this guide should be useful to you.
I’ve included a few comments to make it slightly more user friendly. I will be adding a lot more how-to commentary into this document over time, but for now, my hope is that’s helpful as a guide.
